Couple embark on their initial global journey, opting for a permanent relocation to Thailand for their retirement

Duo embarks on their initial international journey, pursuing eternal sunshine in retirement, destined for the tropical paradise of Thailand.

Nicolia and Charles Connor, a retired couple from the USA, have made a significant life change by moving to Thailand in July 2025. The Connors, who previously resided in North Carolina, chose Thailand for its consistent climate, affordability, and low crime rates, particularly drawn by the country's Buddhist heritage.

The Connors now call a three-bedroom house in Pran Buri, Prachuap Khiri Khan province, central Thailand, their home. This gated community, still under construction, consists of 14 houses. They signed the lease for their house remotely, paying around 700 Euros per month.

The move to Thailand was a well-prepared decision for the Connors. They had no concerns about moving to a new country, having bought a car for 180,000 Baht (4,800 Euro) in Thailand. Their three-year-old dog, Tallulah, was shipped to Thailand with a pet relocation service at a cost of around 6,000 Euros.

Initially, the Connors considered living in Bangkok, but found the city life too hectic. They began exploring regions south of the capital and found Pran Buri to be the perfect fit.

The Connors' average monthly expenses in the USA usually exceeded 4,000 dollars (3,400 Euro). In Thailand, they've set a monthly budget of 1,600 dollars (1,400 Euro). The couple's daughter is preparing to visit them in Thailand.

Several Americans have moved to Thailand in recent years, drawn by the country's safety and relative affordability. The Thailand Destination Visa, introduced in 2024, targets digital nomads, remote workers, and those interested in cultural or wellness activities. The Long-Term Resident Visa is valid for up to ten years, and the Thai Elite Visa allows stays of up to five years.

Nicolia advises others considering a similar move to be open to accepting new cultures. She emphasises the importance of being emotionally prepared for the changes that come with a move. "When you move away from your network, you need to be at peace with yourself, because for a while, that's all you've got," she says.

Before their move, the Connors made online friendships by joining Facebook groups for expats living in Thailand. They also applied for education visas to attend Thai language courses.

The Connors are now enjoying their retirement in Thailand, immersing themselves in the local culture and affordable lifestyle. They look forward to exploring more of the country and making new connections.
