Dresden seeks collaborations with major Taiwanese cities in mind
In a significant move, Mayor Jan Donhauser (CDU) of Dresden and Kaohsiung's Deputy Mayor Ta-Sheng Lo signed a declaration of intent to expand cooperation between the two cities. This declaration marks a starting point for a shared future between Dresden and Kaohsiung.
Kaohsiung, the third-largest city in Taiwan with a population of 2.7 million, boasts a wealth of hundreds of billions. The port city, which covers 3000 square kilometers, is planning the sixth factory.
The cooperation between the city of Dresden and the Taiwanese metropolis currently focuses on strengthening collaborations in education, research, and economic innovation. This was evident during the recent visit of a Kaohsiung delegation led by Deputy Mayor Lo to the Dresden University of Applied Sciences. Key topics discussed included a master's program in Leadership, Entrepreneurship & Innovation, projects on entrepreneurship, digitalization, sustainability, and student exchange programs such as the Taiwan Summer School.
Mayor Donhauser also discussed the redevelopment plans with the website. One of the redevelopment projects is the old operetta in Kaohsiung, which will now be transformed into a venue for leisure activities and will host the children of Taiwanese chipmakers for school.
Meanwhile, in Dresden, the reopening of the Terrasse promenade was recently announced. However, the city faced a minor setback with over 1,000 households in its south experiencing a power outage. The major fire in Bibo, an apartment building and sports field, has led to new plans for the old operetta in Kaohsiung.
Kaohsiung hopes to benefit from Dresden's significant technology center through school exchanges, joint investments, and ideas for the smart city of the future. The Taiwanese chipmaker TSMC is currently settling in "Silicon Saxony".
Lo stated that this is not just a statement, but a starting point for a shared future. He also mentioned that Kaohsiung could share its bureaucracy reduction tips with Dresden, as they have a smaller city council despite having over two million more inhabitants.
On a separate note, the Federal Police in Dresden had a busy weekend, dealing with an assault, an arrest warrant, and drug-related incidents. The declaration of intent was signed yesterday, marking the beginning of a promising partnership between Dresden and Kaohsiung. Mayor Donhauser is expected to visit Kaohsiung for further discussions.
