Dr. Arthur Wadgymar: The Controversial Physician Who Defied Ethics and Conquered Science

Dr. Arthur Wadgymar, a physician with a colourful past, was born in Debrecen, Hungary, in 1824. After a life filled with drama, intrigue, and scientific pursuits, he passed away in 1899, along with his wife, during an influenza outbreak.

Wadgymar's life took a dramatic turn in his youth when he killed his father in a duel over a ballerina. Fleeing Hungary to avoid his brother's revenge, he found himself in the United States in the 1850s. There, he started a medical practice in Louisville, Kentucky, before moving to Texas, where he served as chief physician in Carrizzo Springs.

In Texas, Wadgymar's medical practices were controversial. He attempted to dissect a man who was still alive and in a deep coma, raising ethical questions about his methods. Earlier in his career, he had served as a doctor in the Hungarian army during the 1848-49 revolution and later in the Confederate Army after fleeing to the Netherlands and serving in their navy.

Wadgymar's personal life was equally tumultuous. He eloped and married a woman who later died in a steamboat accident. He remarried and moved to St Louis, where he taught botany and conducted scientific research. After his wife's death, he devoted the rest of his life to scientific work.

Dr. Arthur Wadgymar's life was marked by dramatic events, both personal and professional. From his controversial medical practices to his dramatic past, his legacy remains a complex blend of scientific achievement and ethical controversy.
