The District Museum Marzahn-Hellersdorf, a cultural cornerstone in the historic village center of Alt-Marzahn, is set to embark on a new chapter as it relocates its exhibition activities. The museum's current exhibition at Alt-Marzahn 55 will conclude in November 2025, marking the end of an era.

The museum's main location will be the former village school at Alt-Marzahn 51, a move that provides the institution with additional space and a contemporary foundation for future work. The architectural planning for the renovation was done by the office Rhosho-Architekten.

The renovated buildings will be open to visitors during the nationwide Day of Open Heritage on September 13 and 14, 2025. The District Museum has been a part of Alt-Marzahn for over 25 years, and this relocation marks a significant step forward in its evolution.

The ensemble of the village school and Museumsgut will make Marzahn-Hellersdorf a contemporary institution that showcases both the past and present of the district. A newly designed permanent exhibition that covers historical developments from early settlement to the present day will be created in Museumsgut.

Themes such as migration and social change will be given stronger consideration in the new permanent exhibition. The museum team, led by Claudia Buchwald, has played a significant role in shaping this change.

In cooperation with Agrarboerse Deutschland Ost e.V., Museumsgut will become a vibrant cultural hub with a café and additional offers. The house at Alt-Marzahn 55 will be abandoned after the move.

The District Museum's new location, "Museumsgut", is situated at the historic village square. The renovation of Museumsgut began in the summer of 2023 with an investment of almost six million euros. More than 5.2 million euros of the investment came from the Senate Department for Urban Development, Building, and Housing from the program "Social Infrastructure Measures".

The Senator for Urban Development, Christian Gaebler, praises the creation of a place where tradition and modern cultural mediation come together. The relocation of the District Museum's exhibition activities to the protected courtyard complex at Alt-Marzahn 23, previously known as "KulturGut", also houses the permanent exhibition on the history of the district.

The second building, the former library at Anger 55, will continue to serve as a part of the museum complex. The District Museum Marzahn-Hellersdorf is poised to continue its mission of preserving and interpreting the district's history in its new home, Museumsgut.
