Disregarding Cautions, German Family Ventures to the Mountains
A German family consisting of five members, residing in Baden-Württemberg near Heidelberg, embarked on a hike in the Austrian Tennen Mountains, disregarding warnings from a local resident. The ill-advised journey led to their emergancy call in the dead of night.
Equipped with hiking shoes for the parents and running shoes for the children, the mountain rescue service deemed their gear unsuitable for the tour. The family's decision to proceed with the approximately seven-hour challenging tour, despite the hut keeper of the Ellmau hut warning against it due to poor equipment and old snowfields, resulted in their predicament.
The family had planned to traverse the mountains, starting at 8:30 a.m. from the Ellmau hut in Werfenweng (Pongau) and aiming to reach the Sölden hut via the Hochthron ladder at around 2,500 meters above sea level. Despite repeatedly announcing a later arrival to the landlord, it was at 11:00 p.m. that the father finally called the emergency number, stating they were stranded in the area of the Tauern saddle (2,100 meters) and could not continue.
Eleven mountain rescuers from the Werfen local station rescued the family, guiding them over old snowfields to the hut by 3:15 a.m. Though chilled, the hikers arrived safely. "They were cold, but we provided them with warm clothing on the mountain," said operation leader Stefan Koller.
The rescuers reported that the hikers lacked essential mountain gear such as rain gear, headlamps, and bivouac bags. Koller stated, "The family had been on the go for 17 hours and was not aware of the danger."
