Dikan Center Launches Awo Institute & Ahenfie Museum in Accra
The Dikan Center has launched two significant initiatives in Accra: The Awo Institute and Ahenfie Museum. The launch event, held at the Dikan Annex Building on Koi St in Osu, attracted notable guests such as Minister of Communication Sam George, former Chairperson of Convention People's Party Samira Nkrumah, US Ambassador to Ghana Virginia Palmer, and Osu Mantse Nii Nortey Owuo IV. The Awo Institute, inspired by the African grandmother figure, focuses on research, conservation, and heritage.
The Awo Institute boasts impressive facilities like a digitization lab, audio-visual lab, conservation lab, library, and research center. It also houses the Awo Lab for Digital Humanities and the Borkoor initiative dedicated to music and oral history. The institute aims to bring African heritage back into everyday community life, much like the Ahenfie Museum, which was launched simultaneously. The museum, initiated by the Dikan Center, introduces a fresh approach to African museums, serving as a vibrant communal space for culture and history through storytelling, exhibitions, and interactive events. Dr. Raghu Krishnan hosted the opening event for the Ahenfie Museum at the same venue.
The Dikan Center's launch of the Awo Institute and Ahenfie Museum in Accra promises to enrich the cultural landscape of Ghana. These initiatives, with their focus on heritage, research, and community engagement, are set to preserve and promote African history and culture in innovative ways.
