Deputy Prime Minister of VN emphasizes commitment to fostering a thriving innovation environment

The Austrian-Vietnam High-Tech and Innovation forum saw Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Chi Dung emphasizing Vietnam's dedication to fostering an innovative ecosystem and strengthening international tech collaborations.

In his online speech on May 16 at Vienna's forum, DPM Dung recognized the strong partnership between Vietnam and Austria over the past 50 years, laying a robust base for future synergy. Moreover, Dung applauded Austria's remarkable advancements in core technologies, such as quantum computing, biology, semiconductors, and AI.

With the objective of becoming a high-income developed nation by 2045, DPM Dung underlined the vital role of science and technology (S&T) and innovation in fueling economic growth and increasing competitiveness. Vietnam is prioritizing the elimination of institutional obstacles, streamlining regulations, developing essential S&T infrastructure, and cultivating a skilled workforce to meet evolving demands.

Proposing four strategic areas for cooperation with Austria, DPM Dung highlighted collaboration in AI, semiconductors, quantum technology, and biotechnology. He suggested the establishment of R&D centers, human resource training programs, supporting digital transformation for SMEs, collaborating on green hydrogen technologies, and new solutions for small power plants, and fostering public-private partnerships.

DPM Dung also encouraged the Austrian government, universities, and research institutes to offer scholarships for Vietnamese students and support innovative startups in Vietnam, aiming to create a network of experts to boost technological capabilities.

Vietnamese Ambassador to Austria Vu Le Thai Hoang stressed the promising potential for collaboration between the two nations in high technology, digital technology, and innovation during the conference. Ambassador Hoang underscored Vietnam's pursuit of a technology and innovation-driven economy, while Austria is emerging as a developed economy focused on science and technology, transforming into a digital technology hub in Europe.

He pointed out Vietnam's attractive investment opportunities in sectors prioritized in Resolution 57, including AI, big data, semiconductors and microchips, automation, biotechnology, blockchain, IoT, and new generation mobile networks (5G, 6G). Collaborative efforts between the countries are expected to position Vietnam as a sought-after destination for global tech corporations.

The Vietnam National Innovation Centre (NIC) reiterated Vietnam's commitment to international cooperation in enhancing technology and innovation. Focusing on partnering with Austria, known for its strengths in core technology R&D, would help support Vietnam's strategic industries, including semiconductors, AI, quantum technology, and clean energy.

In an interview with VNA correspondents, Professor Karen Lips, Deputy Director of the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA), emphasized the potential for collaboration with Vietnam, citing IIASA's scientific expertise and global network. IIASA, with Vietnam as a member, offers a neutral space for discussing cross-border scientific initiatives, particularly on issues like climate change, energy security, and sustainable development.

The forum aimed to create a strategic partnership in technology, innovation, and digital transformation, fostering a sustainable collaboration ecosystem that encourages knowledge and resource sharing between the two nations. The event was organized by the Vietnamese Embassy in Austria, the NIC, and the Austrian Chamber of Commerce (WKO), involving key players like Infineon Technologies Austria, Dynatrace, and TTTech from Austria, and FPT and VNPT from Vietnam.

The forum served as a platform for significant discussions among business leaders, policymakers, and researchers from both countries, reinforcing Vietnam's role as a keystone player in the global innovation value chain. It also aimed to entice technology pioneers from Austria and Europe seeking investment opportunities in Southeast Asia while setting the foundation for deeper cooperation in technology transfer, high-quality human resource development, and a sustainable digital future.
