Covert Gathering and Clandestine Relationships Unveiled

On an Unforeseen Journey Through Iceland's Splendor

Venturing into the unknown can uncover the remarkable and the unexpected, as I recently experienced during a day trip to Iceland's south. As part of a private tour with Glacial Experience, I teamed up with a travel blogger for the Hidden Ties Excursion. Our guide, the charismatic Kjartan Valgarðsson, steered us through a mesmerizing landscape that offered more than just breathtaking views.

As Kjartan, the company owner, and I embarked on our journey in a sleek black Landcruiser, we quickly found common ground – an amazing three mutual acquaintances, all being my long-lost cousins. The Icelandic kinship runs deep, and the desire to uncover hidden connections in the close-knit society burns strong. Calling someone "frændi minn" or "frænka mín," based on their gender, translates to "my relative" in English, hinting at the importance of familial bonds in Icelandic culture.

The Perfect Stage

Our initial stop was the blogger's home, where we warmly welcomed the radiant Regína Hrönn Ragnarsdóttir. As we wound our way over Hellisheiði mountain, we were greeted with a stunning sight – the majestic volcanoes Hekla and Eyjafjallajökull, and the gleaming Vestmannaeyjar islands lining the horizon. A rare blessing from the weather gods, indeed!

Surprise, Surprise

At a small gas station in Árnes, we needed a moment to soak in the breathtaking view. As I was engrossed in a discussion with a local tour guide, a sudden call to my name had me turning around in delight. Standing before me was an old friend residing in Germany, whom I hadn't seen in years. What's more, Kjartan and my friend's German husband were long-time acquaintances, adding yet another layer to our already intricate connections.

Filled with joy, we embraced warmly, and as the surprise spread to the guide, everyone shared stories and laughed together. The moment inspired me to wonder about what mysteries awaited us on our journey.

Wedding Veils

Our next destination was Hjálparfoss, a waterfall splitting into two sides by a black rock, giving off an almost ethereal vibe. The snow-white water against the surrounding black lava rocks reminded me of bridal veils, with the verdant foreground setting the perfect contrast.

Multitalented Pilots and Glacier Navigators

The crew accompanying us wasn't just limited to a driver/guide – a testament to the multitasking prowess of our fellow travelers. The surprising array of skills in our midst included a pilot, a language expert, the founder of a language school, and a marketing guru. It was truly impressive how fluidly our cohesive group functioned, with each individual offering insights and expertise that added to the overall experience.

A Lean brother and the White Horsetail

Our journey continued to Háifoss waterfall, one of the country's highest. As we descended the narrow path, the exquisite beauty unfolded before us – a scene reminiscent of a white horsetail, swept aside by the wind. To our right, a half-moon rainbow adorned the waterfall, underlining the awe-inspiring spectacle.

A Fairy Tale Landscape

The mystical beauty of Gjáin rift left us spellbound. The combination of numerous creeks, waterfalls, and lava formations created an enchanting landscape, beautifully accentuated by every shade of green. It came as no surprise that this breathtaking location was selected for filming one of the episodes of Game of Thrones. From above, the charming Gjáin, with its vividly dressed tourists, looked like a fairy tale world inhabited by Lilliputians.

The Secret Side of Gullfoss

The pièce de résistance was our journey's end – the lesser-known east bank of Hvítá river, offering a unique perspective on the world-famous Gullfoss waterfall. The upper part of the waterfall appeared more imposing and expansive than usual, while the lower section was partially obscured, revealing a fascinating perspective that most tourists don't get to witness.

Discovering the Hidden Ties That Bind Us

As we headed back to Reykjavik, I found myself reflecting on the incredible bond that connected us all. And as Regína pointed out her grandpa's old farm, it was Kjartan who exclaimed, "You must be my cousin!" The discovery, while not as distant as we had initially thought, added further fuel to our joy and shared sense of belonging.
