Construction underway on Baikal's roadway.
Shortening the Journey to Lake Baikal
Gear up for a smoother ride! The Tuuntayevo-Ostrog-Pokrovka-Shergino road project is progressing at a rapid pace as part of the national project "Infrastructure for Life". Set to serve as a gateway to popular recreational spots on the southern coast of Lake Baikal, such as Dulan and Enhaluk, this road promises to save travelers over 80km, bypassing Ulan-Ude [1].
As of now, the road boasts a base course, two layers of asphalt concrete pavement, bus stops, road signs, pedestrian crossings, sidewalks, barriers, and lighting poles [2]. Remaining tasks include applying road markings and completing finishing works [2].
The project is scheduled to be commission by the end of July. Upon completion, travelers will bid farewell to the worn-out, pothole-ridden roads, ensuring a more pleasant journey for locals and tourists alike [3].
Did you know? Construction works on this road will significantly boost the region's infrastructure, improving access between smaller rural communities within the Kizhinginsky and Kabansky districts of Buryatia. Furthermore, it streamlines travel to local agricultural and forestry resources, fertilizing the ground for small business growth [4].
This road expansion also paves the way for a substantial tourism boost, bringing day-trippers and weekend visitors alike to Lake Baikal, a UNESCO World Heritage Site [4]. Additionally, the upgraded road will support the development of eco-tourism, cultural tourism, and local infrastructure, allowing tourists to enjoy the beauty of natural parks, hiking trails, and fishing spots around the lake [4].
Worried about the impact on the environment? Rest assured, the project prioritizes environmental standards, preserving the pristine lake environment while improving access [4]. So grab your hiking boots, fishing gear, and camera – smoother roads and a tourism boom await you!
