Commencement of the fresh EU digital travel system in Portugal

The European Union is set to introduce a new digital border management system, known as the Entry/Exit System (EES), to modernize and strengthen border security within the Schengen Area. This innovative system, designed to replace the current manual passport stamping system, is expected to commence operation on October 12, 2025.

The EES is an automated computer system that will register the biometric data (fingerprints and photos) of third-country nationals entering or exiting the Schengen zone. This system aims to increase accuracy and efficiency in monitoring short-term stays, help prevent overstaying, and contribute to preventing irregular migration and protecting the security of European citizens.

The EES will be operational in 29 European countries, including those in the EU and associated with Schengen. These countries include Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland. For travelers, including UK nationals, biometric registration at border crossing points will become mandatory for short stays in these states.

The SES will be introduced gradually by Member States over a period of six months. The system is expected to be operational at all border crossing points by April 2026. The European Commission, in collaboration with the European Union Agency for the Operational Management of Large-Scale IT Systems, will continue to monitor the system's implementation.

Travel will become simpler and safer with the increased use of automated border controls. The EES will provide reliable data on border crossings, which will be crucial for policymakers and border control officials to make informed decisions. The new system meets the highest standards of data protection and privacy, ensuring that travellers' personal data will remain protected and secure.

The EES is a key initiative to strengthen border security, prevent irregular migration, and modernize the entry and exit process at Schengen external borders. The European Commission made an announcement today, emphasizing the importance of this system in maintaining the security of European citizens and the Schengen Area as a whole.
