Future Mayor: Opera must now give something back - Cologne Urged to Follow Hamburg's Lead in Diversifying Opera Audience

The Hamburg Philharmonic Hall's innovative ticketing strategy has sparked a conversation in Cologne. The hall sold tickets in local libraries, diversifying its audience. Now, the city's opera house is being urged to follow suit.

Cologne's opera-loving elite may no longer be sufficient to sustain the opera in the future. Future mayor Torsten Burmester (SPD) has called on the Cologne Opera to open up to all layers of society. He believes this will not only enrich the audience but also help address cost explosion issues.

The opera house has a duty to include everyone in its audience, much like the Hamburg Philharmonic Hall did. By selling tickets in local libraries and other community hubs, the Hamburg hall reached a broader audience, changing its composition. Burmester has not yet detailed specific measures for the Cologne Opera, but the idea is to give something back to the citizens in a similar way.

The Hamburg Philharmonic Hall's success in diversifying its audience has inspired Cologne's future mayor to call for a similar approach at the Cologne Opera. The opera house must now consider how to open its doors to all layers of society, ensuring its future sustainability and enriching the cultural experience for all.
