Climbers Survive Avalanche on Mt Earnslaw in Summer Ascent
Two climbers were caught in an avalanche while attempting a summer ascent of Mt Earnslaw, a 2830m peak in the Neuseeländischen Alps, on the morning of Friday 12 February 2021. Despite the season, the climbers faced significant risks due to recent snowfall and steep terrain.
The pair had set off from the Esquilant Bivvy Hut at 4.30am, aiming to reach the summit between 8.30 and 9am. However, they decided to attempt the south east ridge instead of the normal route due to fresh snow. As the slope steepened towards the summit, an avalanche, approximately 30m wide and 5cm deep, collapsed beneath them. The climbers admitted they had missed signs of increased avalanche danger and should have been more aware of the risks. One of the climbers later admitted, 'I thought I was done for' during the incident. They also realised they should have taken a Personal Locator Beacon or a satellite phone for emergency communication.
The avalanche was large, covering a steep 70-degree slope. Both climbers were carried away but managed to self-arrest and call for help using their mobile phones. They were transported to Lakes District Hospital in Queenstown after a rescue helicopter arrived.
The climbers' quick thinking and use of available technology helped ensure their safety despite the incident. They have since been treated and released from hospital. This event serves as a reminder of the potential dangers of mountaineering, even in summer months, and the importance of careful planning and communication in such environments.
