Choirs from Hellgate entertain at Carnegie Hall

The Hellgate High School Varsity and Chamber choirs embarked on an unforgettable journey to New York City, performing at the legendary Carnegie Hall. The trip was more than just a performance, as the choir members also had the opportunity to tour Radio City, sightsee, and even learn from Broadway stars.

One of the highlights of the trip was working with Andre J Thomas, a composer and director for the Broadway musical Wicked. Lexi Johnson, a sophomore at Hellgate, attended a performance of Wicked and found the experience of working with Thomas "super cool" and educational. Johnson, who has been doing choir since middle school, also mentioned that Wicked is her favorite musical.

Amalie Nevarez, another sophomore at Hellgate, has also been a part of the choir since middle school. For Nevarez, the trip was a big takeaway, as it reminded her that there are places where it's easier to express oneself. Nevarez's highlight of the trip was SUMMIT One Vanderbilt, a skyscraper with interior mirrors taller than the Empire State Building.

The choir members prepared for the performance by doing multiple rehearsals in Carnegie Hall, and there was little anxiety or nervousness among the group before taking the stage. The performance was a recognition of Hellgate's excellent choir program, as the choir combined with a number of other choirs from across the states, creating a large choir for the performance.

The trip also allowed students to experience New York City, visiting famous landmarks such as Times Square at night, which Johnson and Nevarez found particularly memorable. Nevarez even had an encounter with true New York City culture, almost getting spat on during the trip.

Overall, the Hellgate High School choirs' trip to Carnegie Hall and New York City was a cool opportunity to learn from the best, interact with Broadway stars, and experience the world-renowned city. The choir members returned home with newfound confidence, memories to last a lifetime, and a deeper appreciation for the world of professional theater and music.
