Chef Karim Showcases Malaysia's Culinary Diversity at Ascott Palace Event

Dr Shahrim Karim, a renowned professor specializing in Malaysian heritage and culture, hosted an event at the Ascott Palace in Baridhara on 1 October. The event, organized by the Ladies Association of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Malaysia and sponsored by TAS Group and Air Asia, showcased the diversity and richness of Malaysian cuisine.

Karim, also known as Chef Karim, is dedicated to preserving and promoting Malaysia's culinary traditions. He demonstrated the preparation of three dishes that reflect the country's diverse cultural heritage. The first was a coconut pancake served with a spicy anchovy sambal, a dish influenced by the Malay and Chinese communities. The second was a flavorful prawn dish cooked in a spicy pineapple coconut gravy, showcasing the Portuguese influence in Malaysian cuisine. The final dish was a Perlis-style mango sticky rice, a dessert that reflects the Indian and Baba-Nyonya influences.

Karim's work focuses on documenting, refining, and elevating the international recognition of Malaysian cuisine. He has previously supported the Malaysian culinary tradition in events abroad, including one held in Dhaka. His belief in the importance of preserving and promoting culinary traditions for cultural sustainability was evident throughout the event.

The event was a successful showcase of Malaysian cuisine, its diverse influences, and its cultural significance. Chef Karim's dedication to preserving and promoting Malaysia's culinary heritage was evident in his demonstration and explanations.
