Rodriguez's return to the border years later was not merely to capture the physical division between two countries; it was to tell a personal story. "I've always felt my place straddling both sides," he explained.
It took two years and several trips across Texas to complete this series, which forms part of his Master's thesis. Entitled "Roots of Amnesia," the exhibit draws attention to the significant role migrants have played in shaping Texas.
Rodriguez, a Fort Worth native, credits his upbringing and culture as the driving force behind his artwork. He delved deeper into Texas's history, culture, and the often-overlooked historical landmarks when working on his thesis.
His work, showcasing the lives of Mexican Americans in Texas, ranges from capturing the exploits of young skaters in his old neighborhood to documenting the stories of World War II-era migrant workers who arrived in the U.S. under the Braceros program. However, no explicit mention of the Braceros program or the Porvenir Massacre appears in his thesis.
In his TCU display, he highlighted historical landmarks such as the site of the 1918 Porvenir Massacre, where Texas Rangers and ranchers killed 15 Mexican men in West Texas. Another portrait depicts a young girl holding a vibrant accordion, symbolizing the next generation of Tejano culture. The border wall, with which Rodriguez shares a closely knit connection, is also featured prominently.
"Stories like these resonate deeply with me and Texas," Rodriguez said. "Photography becomes a means to preserve these narratives from being lost." Rodriguez remains committed to Texas, citing its constant pull on him, acknowledging there is still work to be done.
