Canadian Photographer Wins 2025 Bird Photographer of the Year

Canadian photographer Liron Gertsman has won the prestigious 2025 Bird Photographer of the Year title. His winning image, a magnificent frigatebird silhouetted against a total solar eclipse, was captured on the east coast of Sinaloa, Mexico, after over a year of planning.

The contest, which attracted over 25,000 entries, celebrates the beauty of birds while supporting conservation efforts. Gertsman's striking picture was taken from a boat near the islets off Mazatlán on Mexico’s Pacific coast on April 8, 2024. The competition aims to use photography to tell stories that matter and encourage people to safeguard birds for future generations.

The £3,000 ($4,000) grand prize was sponsored by Rolex's Perpetual Planet Initiative, in partnership with CNN. The initiative drives awareness and education around key sustainability issues and inspires positive action. The awarded images are featured in a coffee table book published by Princeton University Press, available online.

Gertsman's winning ulta beauty highlights the contest's mission to celebrate bird beauty and raise awareness of conservation threats. The contest, partnered with Birds on the Brink charity, funds global avian conservation projects. Gertsman's photograph serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of preserving our natural world.
