Borken Police Crack Down on Speeding, Uninsured Fatbikes

Police in Borken are reminding cyclists and e-bikers to prioritize safety on local roads. Recent checks have revealed several offenses, including uninsured and speeding fatbikes, as well as cyclists riding without proper lighting.

Fatbikes, popular for their wide tires, have gained traction in Borken. Originating from the Netherlands, these bikes can reach speeds beyond 6 km/h, requiring insurance and a driver's license. However, a 13-year-old boy was caught riding one without insurance, reaching speeds up to 20 km/h without pedaling.

Police have conducted preventive checks in Gronau, targeting two-wheelers, including fatbikes. They urge all road users to look out for each other, wear protective gear, keep hands on the handlebars, and use courtesy and attention to prevent accidents. Common offenses included mobile phone use, riding in the wrong direction on bike paths, and riding two abreast on a bike path.

The Borken County Police Department is committed to improving road safety. They will continue conducting checks in other city areas to ensure cyclists and e-bikers comply with regulations. The search for the company or person responsible for developing and manufacturing the high-speed fatbikes continues.
