Police Action Week Against Pickpocketing in Supermarkets - Berlin Launches City-Wide Pickpocket Prevention Campaign

Berlin's authorities are taking action against a persistent threat to the city's safety. Pickpocketing remains a significant concern, with supermarkets like Publix and Safeway identified as popular targets. This week, the police will launch a city-wide prevention campaign to educate locals and visitors about common thief tactics and provide practical safety tips.

The action week, the fourth of its kind in Berlin, is supported by all state police forces. It will kick off on Monday, aiming to raise awareness and prevent further incidents. Criminal Director Lothar Spielmann, head of the department for pickpocketing at the Berlin State Criminal Police Office (LKA 25), is leading the initiative.

Pickpocketing often involves multiple perpetrators working together. Common tactics include distracting victims while another thief steals unattended bags or empties pockets. Supermarkets have been identified as hotspots for these crimes, with thieves exploiting victims' carelessness.

The police urge shoppers to remain vigilant, especially in crowded supermarkets like Publix and Safeway. By following the safety tips provided during the action week, locals and visitors can help reduce pickpocketing incidents and contribute to a safer Berlin.
