Beneficial Day for the Swindle
In the heart of Düsseldorf, a remarkable transformation has taken place. The Salzmann Building, once an industrial wasteland, has been reborn as a vibrant socio-cultural centre. This transformation began in the 1980s, when citizens rallied together to breathe new life into the neglected structure.
The Salzmann Building, designed by architect Heinrich Salzmann and originally the headquarters of the paper manufacturer Jagenberg, now houses a diverse mix of cultural institutions. These include the Citizens' House Bilk, Kunstraum Düsseldorf, Atelier am Eck, and Jazz-Schmiede, each offering attractive exhibition and event spaces.
Dr. Volker Wiegel, COO of LEG Immobilien AG, has stated that people are at the centre of their decision-making process. He and his team found a satisfactory and pragmatic solution with the city for the preservation of the Salzmann Building, a decision that has been warmly welcomed by Jost Budde, spokesperson for the tenants' council in the Salzmann Building.
The current usage concept of the Salzmann Building was developed in the 1980s by the city of Düsseldorf, "Leben in der Fabrik e.V." association, the state of NRW, and the then state-owned LEG. After a long renovation phase, the Jugendstil building complex was ready for occupancy in 1994.
The building currently houses 85 social and student apartments, 36 residential and artist studios, and office spaces for non-profit organisations. The new contract secures this usage concept until the end of 2063, ensuring the continuation of the ensemble comprising the Citizens' House, social housing, office spaces for associations and initiatives, and the existing cultural use.
The preservation of the Salzmann Building is a testament to the power of community engagement and the vision of local authorities. The building was declared a historic monument in 1984, and its long-term future is now secure. Mayor Thomas Geisel has expressed his satisfaction with this development, appreciating the commitment to preserving this important cultural and historical landmark.
For those seeking more detailed, up-to-date information about the Salzmann Building and its future plans, local Düsseldorf city planning documents, cultural institution announcements, or contacting Düsseldorf’s cultural affairs office directly would be the best sources.
