During the upcoming Ascension weekend, motorists in North Rhine-Westphalia, particularly around Cologne, should brace themselves for potential congestion and delays according to the ADAC. Easter Monday saw 779 congestion hours, making it one of the ten most congested days of the year, the ADAC reported.

The increased traffic is attributed to the end of the school year, with many students having movable holidays and taking their short vacations. In several other federal states, the bridge day is a uniform school holiday, further increasing the likelihood of congestion.

About 700 active construction sites in North Rhine-Westphalia are expected to contribute to the traffic congestion, with many areas featuring restricted lanes posing a high risk, according to Roman Suthold, head of the traffic and environment department at ADAC Nordrhein. The motorways around Cologne and in the Ruhr region may become overwhelmed, he predicts.

The ADAC expects the peak traffic to occur on Wednesday afternoon between 1:00 PM and 7:00 PM, when commuters and vacationers will likely be on the roads simultaneously. Those traveling in the evening or on Thursday are likely to reach their destinations more quickly and with less stress.

On Sunday afternoon, the return traffic should result in heavier traffic once more. However, Suthold expects fewer congestion hours compared to the beginning of the long weekend as there are no commuters on the road at that time.

When attempting to bypass congestion by taking country roads, the ADAC advises against it. Spokesperson suggests only deviating from the motorway if there are congestion of over ten kilometers or a complete closure.

During the Ascension weekend, increased traffic in North Rhine-Westphalia is expected to stem from school holidays, public holidays, and construction sites. Travelers may find it helpful to check traffic updates, plan their routes in advance, and utilize real-time traffic services or apps like Google Maps or Waze to navigate through Cologne and its surroundings efficiently.
