Prepare for Chaos! Trafficapalooza Awaits during Whitsun Weekend

Anticipated congestion at the commencement of the Pentecost holiday weekend. - Anticipated heavy traffic during Pentecost weekend kickoff

Get ready to hit the road - or avoid it at all costs - as the Whitsun weekend is shaping up to be a traffic nightmare! The ADAC and the Autobahn Corporation are warning of "very dense traffic" and increased risks of congestion, especially during Friday afternoon.

It's a Gold Rush to the Netherlands, as throngs of vacationers flock immediately after school lets out. But fear not, the Whitsun weekend may not be the most congested weekend of the year, according to the Verkehrsclub ADAC.

Trains will also be a bustling affair, particularly at the beginning of the long weekend. The dreaded hammer falls on the important ICE route from Hamm to Hanover, closing it for a week from Friday evening due to work.

Stay clear of the highways between 1pm and 6pm on Friday, as both holidaymakers and commuters will clog the arteries of transportation, according to the ADAC. Flexible commuters might want to swing into action in the evening hours.

The heartache doesn't stop there. The South of Germany is also bracing for congestion, as Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria embark on their two-week vacations. In familiar hotspots such as Cologne and the Ruhr region, traffic will be as brutal as ever.

But fear not, Sunday will be a relative breeze on the highways, and Whitsun Monday traffic has historically caused few problems. Luckily for North Rhine-Westphalia students, they're enjoying an extra day off on Tuesday.

There's no escaping border controls in the Netherlands though. Several roads between Emmerich-Elten on the Lower Rhine and the Dutch border town of Beek will be closed over the Whitsun weekend. Frustrated drivers tried to avoid controls on the A3 motorway in the past, leading to dangerous situations on alternative roads, so they will be shut to prevent gridlock.

Don't forget about those pesky construction sites! The NRW highways will be chock-full of obstructions, particularly at the heavily traveled A42 motorway in the Ruhr area. The motorway will be closed in both directions on Friday evening, from Bottrop-South to Essen-North, due to bridge construction work. The demolition and rebuilding of a bridge with a wider span is underway, and the motorway needs more space for its six-lane expansion.

All aboard the trains! As it turns out, trains during the Whitsun holiday are pretty popular. Travelers are flocking between the major metropolises. However, there are restrictions on the ICE route between North Rhine-Westphalia and Hanover due to modernization work. No problem, long-distance trains will be diverted, and their stops in Gütersloh, Bielefeld, Bad Oeynhausen, and Minden will be suspended until June 13.

In local transport, closures will affect trains on lines RE6, RE70, RE78, RB61, RB71, RB72, and RB77. Passengers should prepare to take detours or switch to replacement buses.

Stay tuned for updates on traffic jams, construction sites, and public transport disruptions during the Whitsun weekend. Happy adventures!
