In a statement, Ha Nguyen McNeill, acting administrator of the TSA, shared:

"The TSA is working hand in hand with our industry partners, ensuring our airport security checkpoints are staffed and equipped to manage the increased traffic...We're deploying tech and procedures to bolster security and enhance the traveler experience, including for families. Our request to passengers is patience, especially during peak days, as we strive to deliver top-notch customer service."

Five significant alterations to TSA rules, scheduled to take effect in 2025, are on the horizon. Here's what you need to know:

  1. Real ID Compliance Requirement - Starting May 7, 2025, passengers flying domestically within the U.S. must present a compliant REAL ID, or they will be denied boarding. Certain exceptions apply, including active-duty military members, retirees, their families, veterans with specific Veterans Health Identification Cards (VHIC), and children under 18.
  2. Liquids and Carry-On Bag Rules - Passengers are required to put all liquids and gels in a quart-sized, clear, zip-top bag for security screening. Medications and child nourishment are exceptions and need separate inspection. Additionally, duty-free liquids purchased abroad can still be carried under specific conditions.
  3. Ban on Specific Items in Checked Bags - TSA is banning specific items like lithium batteries in checked baggage for safety reasons. Travelers must pack these items in their carry-on baggage instead.
  4. Procedural and Enforcement Reforms by DOT impacting TSA - The Department of Transportation (DOT) released a notice in May 2025 that reinstated procedural rules governing enforcement and rulemaking to provide travelers and carriers improved due process protections during enforcement actions.
  5. Continued TSA Acceptance of Older Military IDs - TSA agents are trained to accept older Department of Defense ID cards with no expiration dates, like older DD-1173 cards. In case a TSA officer hesitates, travelers can consult their supervisor for clarification.

Travelers should ensure they comply with these new regulations to ensure a smooth experience at airport security. Happy traveling!

During the 4th of July weekend, it's beneficial to consider your lifestyle and prepare for increased fevers as the TSA anticipates a surge of 18.5 million travelers between July 1st and July 7th. By 2025, several TSA rules will change, including the Real ID Compliance Requirement, which mandates that passengers flying domestically present a compliant REAL ID or be denied boarding.
