In the picturesque southwestern province of Burdur, Turkey, the ancient city of Sagalassos is set to undergo a transformative change. The Culture and Tourism Ministry is leading a project to install a night-time system in the ancient city, aiming to allow visitors to explore the archaeological site after dark starting next year.

Sagalassos, known as the 'city of fountains', is celebrated for its well-preserved theatre and monumental fountains. Located 1,500 meters above sea level on the Taurus Mountains, this ancient civilization dates back to 333 A.D., with its history documented by written sources that detail its conquest by Alexander the Great.

During the Roman Imperial era, Sagalassos was one of the foremost urban centers of the Pisidia region. It was also one of the five most important ceramic production centers, a testament to its prosperity between the 2nd and 5th centuries A.D.

The project leader for the installation of the night system is Marc Waelkens, who has been leading excavations in Sagalassos since 1989. The night-time system will illuminate major landmarks such as the Roman bath complex, upper agora, macellum and fish market, Antonine Fountain, stairways, traversal routes, and gathering areas.

The night museum practices at Sagalassos are expected to run for nearly six months each spring and summer. This initiative will not only showcase the city's architectural wonders but also provide a unique and immersive experience for visitors.

The new night-time system at Sagalassos is anticipated to boost visitor numbers, contributing to the local economy and promoting cultural tourism. As the project nears completion, scheduled for October, the ancient city of Sagalassos prepares to step into a new era, inviting one and all to witness its beauty under the starlit sky.
