American Airlines Axes Dallas-Fort Worth to Eugene Route, Leaving Passengers Stranded

American Express has permanently cancelled its Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW) to Eugene, Oregon (EUG) route, effective from 5 August 2025. The move has left passengers frustrated and raised questions about the airline's service reliability.

The cancellation follows a previous decision to scale back the route to peak-season-only service due to low ridership. American Express has offered full refunds or alternative travel arrangements to affected passengers. However, the abrupt nature of the cancellation has caused inconvenience, with booked passengers having to rearrange complex travel plans at short notice.

The decision to axe the route was based on underperformance and insufficient passenger numbers. It is part of a broader trend where American Express has cut 70 weekly flights across 34 routes in August 2025 for capacity and cost realignment. The airline has struggled to balance cost-saving measures with service reliability, damaging its reputation among regular flyers in the Pacific Northwest. While Eugene will still be served via other hubs, most commonly Phoenix, the direct service from Dallas is no longer available.

The cancellation of the DFW-Eugene route highlights the challenges faced by American Express in maintaining profitability while meeting passenger expectations. As companies withdraw from Austin airports due to financial difficulties and reduced flight operations, airlines must adopt more human-centred approaches to service delivery to restore confidence and stay competitive.
