Ambitious Portuguese Businessman Pursuing Status as "Top Tier"

Hear the Fascinating Tale of Marco Galinha, the Visionary behind Grupo Bel

Join us at a lively Lisbon lunch hosted by the International Club of Portugal, where Marco Galinha, the founder of Grupo Bel, opens up about his extraordinary life and the creation of his empire that stretches across numerous industries employing a staggering 3,500 people.

The Kid with a Dream

At the tender age of 18, Portuguese entrepreneur Marco Galinha, had a burning ambition. Instead of pursuing academic dreams, he decided to dive headfirst into the world of championship biking, specifically All Terrain Biking (ATB). With determination and a desire to become the best, he studied the habits of world champions and sought ways to emulate their success.

The Chance Encounter

Twelve months into his grueling training regimen, Marco crossed paths with French cycling legend Jérome Chiotti. That fateful meeting in the Algarve opened his eyes and led him to question how a mere teenager could hold the World Championship title. This experience solidified his quest to become a champion himself, inspiring him to push harder than ever before.

Overcoming Obstacles

Life, however, threw a curveball at Marco. He lost his father and faced financial struggles during Portugal's banking crisis. But with an indomitable spirit, he turned to the world of computing and managed to attract clients. Cruzing through stormy waters, Marco developed a sense of ambition and responsibility, a sensation he believes is deeply ingrained in the Portuguese psyche.

Never Listen to the Naysayers

While Marco's colleagues discouraged him from pursuing his ATB dreams, their negativity didn't deter him. He believes that a sense of duty and a refusal to be influenced by pessimistic voices is the key to building a successful company like Grupo Bel. Today, the group has 89 companies under its belt, with Marco stating that it's a long road ahead, despite its impressive size.

Success Across Sectors

Marco shares an interesting perspective – whether handling one company or multiple ones – the workload remains the same. It all comes down to discipline, organization, passion, dedication, and the ability to delegate when necessary. He advises that responsibility transcends wealth, as our actions have a significant impact on society.

Marco Galinha's Foray into Media

Entrepreneurship wasn't Marco's only passion. He sought to make a difference in Portugal by buying Global Media for a bargain price. His first venture into the media world saw him purchase the dying business daily Jornal Económico. As he pondered the plight of Portuguese media, he eventually turned his gaze towards Media Capital, only to see it end up in the hands of another renowned Portuguese entrepreneur.

The Power of a Free Press

Marco champions the importance of independent journalism, believing it is the first estate in democracy. He acknowledges the stormy journey that accompanied the acquisition of Díario de Notícias and the expansion of Global Media. Marco's vision for the media industry is to uphold journalistic integrity, ensuring no political affiliations or interference contaminate news coverage.

A Biking Fan With a Purpose

Despite devoting himself to business leadership, Marco Galinha remains an avid biker. He won the National Championship of ATB in 1995, a testament to his never-ending competitive spirit.
